Forced Organ Harvesting from Living People – Past, Present, Future

Sixteen years ago, the international community was made aware of forced organ harvesting from living persons for their organs in China. It is an unprecedented abuse of the medical profession, a violation of ethical standards in medicine, and a criminal practice.

As inconvenient it might be to confront and take actions to address this issue, in order to uphold the reputation of the medical profession, all medical professionals must now act against this abuse. Silence and inaction, hoping that the issue will resolve on its own is analogous to knowing there is a cancer and hoping it will dissolve on its own.

The most professional approach for the medical community is to diagnose the issue and then treat it. If a small group of medical professionals commit crimes against humanity, medical doctors everywhere need to inform themselves and act.

Our webinar will present a roundtable discussion on this topic, provide a review of the evidence that has been gathered in the past, update the audience about the latest research and discuss the next steps of action to stop forced organ harvesting. Our purpose is to educate medical professionals and equip them with data and knowledge so as to lay a path forward towards ending the abuse of forced organ harvesting.

Ποιο θα ήταν το μέλλον της Ελλάδας εάν απομακρυνόταν από ένα καθεστώς που διαπράττει εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας;

In commemoration of the International Human Rights Day and the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, DAFOH hosted a video conference on December 10, 2020:

“The Pandemic and Forced Organ Harvesting – Europe’s Opportunity to End its Illusions about China”
From its birthplace in ancient Greece to the modern day, ethics have influenced conduct and behavior in European societies. The Hippocratic Oath is the guiding principle for the medical profession, and businesses integrate corporate ethics. Consensus on ethical values has shaped the basic rights of the people and laid the foundation for peace and prosperity throughout the European continent.

In 2020, Europe plunged into economic and social crisis after the Chinese leadership allowed the Wuhan virus to spread outside China. While the world was caught unprepared for such a threat, the communist regime in Beijing had already begun to stockpile billions of face masks in February. The lack of transparency resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of European lives. But the pandemic is not an isolated case of China breaching medical ethics and causing disillusionment.

In 2019, the China Tribunal (chinatribunal.com/), chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice, concluded that China has practiced forced organ harvesting extensively and primarily from Falun Gong practitioners who have suffered over two decades of persecution, which constitutes, in essence, a cold genocide.

Europeans should be alarmed by the fact that China brutally persecutes people for their faith in truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, as these principles are deeply ingrained in European people. Europe’s leaders need to ask: What does Europe expect from China and what should Europe do about China’s human rights abuses?

Economic ties to China distort the answers. However, as the pandemic has unequivocally demonstrated, such economic ties can be fragile, especially when the business partner does not play fair. What will it take for Europe to awaken from its illusions about China?

Consensus on ethical standards, transparency and trust are key factors for any successful and healthy collaboration. Uncovering violations in these areas is a first step in building such consensus. Europe has started to address the issue of forced organ harvesting with the Written Declaration WD 48 passed by the European Parliament in 2016 and the Convention against Trafficking of Human Organs (No. 216) by the Council of Europe in 2015.

Independent research has confirmed that the Chinese Government has been killing Falun Gong practitioners for their organs for over 20 years.

Recognized by the China Tribunal as a crime against humanity, the Chinese Government’s practice of forced organ harvesting has been understood as the primary means to suppress and eliminate Falun Gong.

What more can the US and other nations do to protect Falun Gong practitioners?

How can the US protect patients in this country from going to China to obtain these illegally procured organs?

What are the consequences for the US and other countries if steps are not taken to end forced organ harvesting?

Mr Hamid Sabi – Counsel to the China Tribunal addressed the UN Human Rights Council on the 24th September, 2019. (Footage provided by UN live feed and Ingenieurs du Monde.)

FULL SPEECH TEXT

Mr. Vice President

The Durban Declaration “affirms the urgent need to prevent, combat and eliminate all forms of trafficking in persons.” Including organ trafficking.

The China Tribunal, a people’s tribunal chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, considered all available evidence and concluded that forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience including the religious and ethnic minorities of Falun Gong and Uyghurs has been committed for years throughout China on a significant scale, and that it continues today. This involves hundreds of thousands of victims.

Acting on independent legal advice, the Tribunal concluded that commission of Crimes Against Humanity against Falun Gong and Uyghurs had been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

Victim for victim and death for death, cutting out the hearts and other organs from living, blameless, harmless, peaceable people constitutes one of the worst mass atrocities of this century.

Organ transplantation to save life is a scientific and social triumph. But killing the donor is criminal.

Government and international bodies must do their duty not only in regard to the possible charge of genocide but also in regard to Crimes Against Humanity, which the tribunal does not consider to be less heinous.

It is the legal obligation of UN Member States and the duty of this council to address this criminal conduct.

Thank you Mr Vice President.

A recent documentary produced by South Korean TV Chosun that aired in November 2017 explores ethical dilemmas facing Koreans regarding organ transplantation. The film explains that only ten percent of the 32,000 Koreans currently waiting for organs will ever receive them. As South Korea has low voluntary organ donation rates, many Koreans choose to forgo the five year wait for a kidney transplant and instead, take advantage of the easy access to and short wait times for organs in Chinese hospitals.

The “Investigative Report 7” team traveled to an unnamed hospital in Tianjin, China with the medical documents of a Korean man in need of a kidney to inquire about obtaining an organ for him. With hidden cameras they interviewed the head nurse and an elderly Korean patient who was recovering from a recent transplant operation.
